#OOTD- PYE X LARRY BELL…THE ART OF PAJAMAS

Art have always been a major source of inspiration in fashion. Personally I’ve always  believe fashion is art which is worn on the body and as fashionistas, our bodies is a blank canvas which we use to express ourselves to create an artwork thru clothes every single day.

Last month, I’ve had the privilege to attend the opening exhibition of Artist Larry Bell at Pacific Place in Hong Kong.  The exhibition “Pacific Red”features three large-scale reflective glass cubes in red, to turn air and light into an aesthetic object. Each object send a shimmering, immersive effect throughout space and are completed as artworks when an individual interacts with them, producing countless reflections.

To celebrate this exhibition , PYE created a limited edition pajama top which made with new technology fabric — Dynamic Yarn and changes colours as the light hits the garment to reflect on the way Bell’s exhibition uses light to reflect on his art work.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAIn the past few seasons, pajamas and lounge wear have been an IT item on the runway for both mens and womenswear.  In a way, we are coming into a generation in fashion which the definition of garments are merging.  Pajamas are no longer just for sleeping and can be worn out on the streets with clever styling.

Since the PYE X LARRY BELL pajama top is made from the most gorgeous woven fabric, I’ve decided to treat it as a Knitwear cardigan.  Somehow it felt right to style it with a print shirt to create a mix of textures.  Wide leg cropped trousers kept the vibe of the outfit relaxed to compliment the idea of pajamas.  Miss matching socks with my initials by Lovie kept the outfit fun and embroidered Prada shoes finished off the outfit.

Decided to try some crazy posing and a slightly new backdrop to go with the “art” theme.

COACH BLEEKER SLIM CHRONO WATCH- Jewels that tells time.

In a generation that phone is often used to tell time, and watches are used to look at photos and look at whatsapp messages, I believe every man needs to wear a watch because it gives the impression that you are punctual even if you are late all the time lol.   Someone have once said to me the type of watch you wear gives people the impression of who you are- a sports watch gives the impression that you are athletic , a vintage watch gives the impression you see the beauty in the old times while a Rolex defines your wealth.  For me, I always love a classic timeless watch with a metal chain ( because every time I wear leather straps it breaks easily while plastic straps is not practical for summer because of sweat). Which is why I would like to introduce to you one of my favorite new watch by COACH.

LR BLOG10

The Bleecker Slim Navy Chrono Bracelet Strap Watch features a 42mm Diameter Mineral Crystal face which is the perfect size for men who loves to wear jackets, its water resistant and features 3 stop watches options- 60 seconds, 30 minutes and 24 hours. The classic design is timeless and is perfect for any occasion. The Navy Blue colour is unique because usually we mostly see men watches in Black or Silver and keeps the watch modern and young.
While coming up with an idea of street snaps featuring this watch, At first I wanted to look classic and sophisticated to go with Coach’s brand image however, after looking at their flamboyant SS16 collection, I realise I can be myself and pair the outfit with something slightly more conceptual.
I always believe Watches or Time Pieces are jewellery with a function- jewellery that tells time. Which is why when I saw this suit custom made for me by from my dear fd 112mountainyam  with a Jewels Print from his FW15 collection, I’ve decided to try to pair the 2 together – the classic of the watch with the “bling” from the suit.  For me the final result shows that A good classic watch will always work with any outfit for any types of Fashionistas.

OOTD- #BTW3 DECONSTRUCTED CHECKERED SWEATER

Sorry for being MIA for a while interms of blogging.

Have been super busy juggling with life as a hair stylist , blogger and fashion designer.  Yes I am proud to happily announce that the first collection of my fashion label BTW3 have officially launched.  Its been a very long creative journey and I feel so blessed to have so much support from followers , fellow designers and of course my amazing team who helped me so much along the way.  Which is why I would like to come back to this blog by sharing an OOTD streetsnap post featuring one of my favourite pieces of the collection.

While designing my first collection for BTW3, somehow it felt right to design clothes from my off duty wardrobe- wearable, timeless clothing which can be worn to work or to brunch on weekends.  Diane Von Furstenberg have once said, “Good Clothing should be like friends and throughout the years, your wardrobe will be a collection of “friends” which will come back and make you feel good about yourself whenever you need them”.  I really want BTW3 to be a collection of “Friends for Life” for my customers in the future.

On the other hand every season, it is important for me to produce an item which I can be creative and push myself as a fashion designer.  With Collection 1 my “Deconstructed Checkered Sweater” is the creative piece in the collection.
Playing with the idea of the classic checkered knit sweater, I’ve moved the classic V neck towards one side so it looks like a TICK or asymmetric V  then rotated the checkered print in the opposite direction. The contrasting of the plaid extends to the sleeve so it almost looks like the sleeve is woven into the sweater.  The sweater comes in 2 other colour ways but for my first OOTD post featuring my own design on this blog, I’ve decided to go with the one with HOT PINK- my favourite colour with green.  A white shirt, pink jeans, black Prada shoes and a pair of pink and purple KENAX LEUNG sunnies finish my bold take to a classic menswear look.
Without further Doodahs here are the photos.

#OOTD : MEN IN KILT

When we were young, we were taught with the perception that pants are for Boys while dresses and skirts are for girls. As we grow older, due to fashion trends, practicality and also the feminist movement, trousers become a wardrobe staple amongst women as well HOWEVER, even in today’s trends driven society with edgy fashion designers such as Rick Owens, Jean Paul Gaultier, JW Anderson, Commes Des Garcon frequently showing numerous versions of skirts and dresses in their collections; skirts and dresses is often not considered a clothing item for men.
It is ironic because looking back at fashion history, Skirts and Dresses is often worn by men in cultures all around the world. Back in Ancient Times, a Shendyt – a skirt similar to a sarong or loin cloth is a wardrobe staple for men. In Japan, the Hakama – a long trapeze skirt is traditionally designed for men to wear during formal occasions such as  tea ceremonies, weddings and funerals.  In China and Hong Kong we have the traditional Chang Shan – a floor length robe which is still popular amongst men of all age to wear during Chinese New Year and who can forget the Scottish Kilt – still a wardrobe staple for men to wear to formal occasions  in European Countries today.  It wasn’t until the 20th Century, in a male dominated society which tailored pants with suits replaced the skirts and defined power and masculine for men.  It is interesting because some how it felt like with the invention of trousers, the “gender” of skirts is passed on to women until the 80s punk culture and the kilt became a fashion item for men again. Which is why with my facination with androgyny, I’ve decided to attempt the skirt as my #ootd for a recent fashion event.
I’ve worn a lot of skirts in the past but usually they are long and also I haven’t had a edgy “punk” ish #ootd for a very long time, so as soon as I saw this red tartan kilt in the recent Versus collection, it became the starting point for this outfit. Unlike the model, I wanted to wear it the traditional way without the matching trousers so I wanted to keep the rest of the outfit relatively simple but edgy with a Black and white shirt, a pair of laced up boots and my Bambi backpack by Givenchy.  A pair of plaid socks gives a nod to the kilt and also kept it masculine.  The result felt surprisingly masculine (for me because you all know I love my prints, hotpinks and plunging V neckline) but the only downfall is I wore this on a windy day so the kept flying up- style sisters: my respect for you increased 200% after that day.

#OOTD – Oriental Garden

Fashion Labels.
Every fashionista will always have their favourite fashion designers and design labels even though I know there’s always the old saying that style is about what the garment looks like not what is the name on the label tag.
My followers on Instagram and here on my blog will know that I sometimes play favorites with designers both in Hong Kong and Internationally because I find it impossible to just buy 1 item if I love the whole collection, which is why I always get so excited when I discover a new designer who I fell in love with at a fashion show and the excitement increased when it came from a student fashion show.
Those of you who have read my previous post will know that I was extremely impressed with the level of talent of the menswear at Raffles College Fashion Show at Hong Kong Fashion Week. Out of the 4 collection there was 1 collection who I fell in love with from the moment I saw the pieces at the press preview party before the show and truly delivered on the runway.
Ahtram by Martha Sartika is a final year fashion design student who presented her pre-collection at Raffles Fashion Show this year.  You all know that I will always have a true love for prints especially digital print on prints so the looks caught my eye straight away.  Martha’s biggest talent as a designer is the fact that she understands wearability yet brings creativity to the clothes thru her prints and adding her own design details such as pleats and appliques. Which is why I was so honored to wear a few pieces for this photo shoot so soon after the fashion show.
For this outfit, I chose a printed tee in the most gorgeous shades of purple over a black shirt , a pair of pleated denim shorts and a mixed print and denim bomber jacket which felt like a work of art.  A pair of printed shorts, cargo boots and a Liberty weekend bag I got from my recent trip to London Completed the look.  Although this smart casual style is my typical work uniform, but this version of print on print felt abit more masculine than my usual choices.  Also I don’t usually do denim because it is usually too raw and casual for my taste but the details in the shorts made them feel more sophisticated.

#OOTD – Iridescent Minimalism

Fashion for me have always been a form of experimentation. Unlike many fellow bloggers or fashionistas who may have a signature look but for me I like to challenge myself to explore different ways to push my style boundaries to create different reincarnations of my self at events.  As I get older, I’ve learnt to never say never to any item or style of clothing because I always end up wanting to wear something I’ve once said “I WILL NEVER WEAR “…………..”.” so its so important to keep an open mind about things I haven’t had a chance to try yet.

Sometime meeting a garment with a style you’ve never tried before is like meeting a new friend with a personality you’ve never been friends with but happened to click by accident.  The moment came when I was at a designer’s office getting tailored for a printed suit this season.  It was a long purple jacket rendored in this thin, shiny fabric.  Even though Barbie is a fashion icon for me as seen in my previous posts here and here but I’ve never worn Iridescent fabrics and I seldom wear lavender because even though I love androgyny , I’ve always stirred away from it because I worry it may look too camp; but after I stared at the jacket at least 5 times during the 3 minute measuring session, My designer friend made me try it on just to get it over and done with.

It was love at first sight and surprised both me and the designer how much it suited me.  The silhouette and tailoring of the jacket is very masculine without being heavy because of the fabric.  The feminine lavender colour is a feminine touch and made it andrognous. But the biggest surprise was the Iridescent which made it sparkle without any sequin or crystal.  The whole effect felt like Cinderella when her Fairy God Mother turned her rags into a ball gown.

To style this amazing jacket, I gave myself another style challenge : keeping the look clean and minimal because I want a blank canvas for the jacket.  So I decided to go with a simple long tunic by the designer himself, a long white crisp sporty style pair of trousers and a pair of white sandals. Sleeking my hair back with gel was a wink to the Iridescence to finish off the look. Without further doodahs, Here are the photos.

#OOTD – The Perfect Plan B

Hong Kong weather in summer is often so unpredictable especially in the past few weeks.  My followers on instagram will know that lately, I’ve been trying to do more outdoor #ootd photoshoots. It is always interesting to see how each outfit works with a different scenery to create the perfect fashion street snap.  Which is why everywhere I go I look around to see which location and interesting to compliments which outfits I have in my closet.  Sometimes, I will wear an outfit first then walk around with my assistant to see where its best to shoot the clothes, but for this outfit I had a specific location in mind.  So imagine my disappointment when it rained heavily the day I have to wear this outfit to the designer’s popup event.
Not wanting to wear the exact same outfit to shoot again waiting for the weather to improve ( cause I never really like to wear the exact
same outfit twice ) I’ve decided to try to experiment with using this
outfit but shoot it indoors without going out in the rain- the back
stairs and the space in the old industrial building outside my office.
Lets talk about the outfit first.  Those of you who read this blog
from the very beginning will know that I wear alot of Hong Kong
Fashion Brand Modement.  I love how the brand innovates menswear yet
also have pieces that are very wearable and compliments the body.
One of the signature pieces for Modement SS15 is a geometric print in
primary colours which features birds in a semi sheer fabric.  I fell
in love with it as soon as I saw it last year because for me Fashion
is art and I would hang that print up my wall.  Playing with that idea
I decide to compliment the print jacket with basic clean whites to
create a canvas against my art work and my new printed Giuseppe
Zanotti Sneakers which FINALLY went on sale. For some reason I really
want to clash it with Sailor Moon socks to bring some fun and
quirkiness to the outfit.
The result end up going suprisingly well with the location. The brightness and fun of the outfit contrast very well with the rawness of the industrial building. Also realise my building have a few bright colours which compliments the outfit. After going thru the photos, I realise sometimes plan b can be better than plan A cause I never throught a place I walk past everyday on my way to work have so many beautiful elements which matches this outfit.
